okay.. i'm gonna be honest. i quit making new year's resolutions a very long time ago. and if you make them, i don't mean to offend. they just do not work for me. when i made them, i would break them in 2 weeks tops.
so this year, instead of making resolutions, i decided to pick a word for the year.
my word is: DISCIPLINE
maybe i could describe it better as self-discipline:
Self-discipline refers to the training that one gives oneself to accomplish a certain task or to adopt a particular pattern of behavior, even if one would rather be doing something else. Self-discipline is the assertion of willpower over more base desires, and is usually understood to be synonymous with self control. Self-discipline is to some extent a substitute for motivation, when one uses reason to determine a best course of action that opposes one's desires. Virtuous behavior is when one's motivations are aligned with one's reasoned aims: to do what one knows is best and to do it gladly. Continent behavior, on the other hand, is when one does what one knows is best, but must do it by opposing one's motivations. Moving from continent to virtuous behavior requires training and some self-discipline.
so i wrote down different areas in my life that i wanted to be disciplined in.
#1::: Bible reading/prayer: this is something that i find i battle with a lot. i am not faithful. and i beat myself up over it all the time. but this year, i vow to read more of the Bible.. and be more faithful. it's amazing how i have been reading the One Year Bible & i feel tons better! and i've already learned a lot in the 20 something days that i've really stuck with it. i've had so many questions & i'm sure i'm driving brandon crazy. on prayer.. i pray every day. we pray every night at fox's bedtime. but honestly, that's probably the only time i really do pray. we pray for everyone. but this year, i really want to expand my prayer life. i don't want to have these route (sp?) prayers. i want it to be more intimate.. and to pray throughout the day. in the Bible, it says to pray without ceasing. it doesn't mean to pray 24/7. but i want a deeper relationship with him... when it comes to prayer. i want to pray throughout the day.. and talk to him more.
#2::: Finances & spending: we are really trying to tackle this one. we're trying not to eat out so much. we will spend $100 in groceries in 1 week & still eat out 3-5 times. that is so not cool. when we do our budget, we figured we ate out a lot.. and it hurts when you see on paper how much you are spending! also, i am wanting to think twice or three times before i purchase anything that i do not need. i'm not really an "impulsive" buyer, but i need to really consider my family & our finances when i spend money on things we don't need. i can do without new clothes or home decorations. but it would be so lovely to have new boots or that colorful wall clock from hobby lobby! just saying!
#3::: Exercise/ food: okay, this one is #3 for a reason.. because i haven't really tackled this one as hard as i have the others... but last night, i determined i'm fed up of this extra weight! i have worked out on our elliptical twice. ha! i want to start running. i used to run 3 miles every other day when i graduated high school. i liked it. so i want to get back at it! and concerning food. well, yea. i need major help here. i usually justify eating CRAP with me being a nursing mom. well, i don't want to make excuses anymore. i need to eat better so i can have a longer life. i want to fit into my cute gap jeans! i want to wear what i want, not what i eat! so trying to cut out a lot of greasy/fattening/fried foods & sweets! i'm not saying i'll never eat these again.. but just not as often as i do. and also, control the portions that i eat! try to not go back to the stove for another helping!
so there you have it!
i'm hoping to be disciplined so things will come naturally to me & it won't be such hard work!
